About Us
The American Society of Islamic Philosophy and Theology (ASIPT) is a collaborative fellowship of scholars who are dedicated to deep and sustained rationalist [‘aqli] inquiry into fundamental questions of Philosophy and Theology via traditional Islamic epistemologies. We create fellowship through conferences and collaborative research discussions, publishing the results thereof in academic journals and our curated and peer-reviewed web portal. We engage ecumenically across confessional and denominational lines as well as academic disciplines; we welcome all scholars and advanced students of Islam’s engagement with the “Big Questions”, those questions that are universally relevant across history and cultures, as well as questions particular to contemporary concerns in Muslim communities.
Four Broad Aims of ASIPT
In short, through conferences, collective textual study and annotation, and the resultant publications, we aim to address the “Big Questions” and major theological and philosophical problems in Muslim communities today through collectively improving our mastery of the foundations, tools, and methods of Islamic Philosophy and Theology and sharing our discoveries with the scholarly and general public.

First Aim
This fellowship will connect with international networks of scholars in the Muslim world and beyond.

Second Aim
The critical mass is from our small working groups of already established scholars from a variety of related fields and centered around the task of collectively annotating and jointly studying digital editions of core theological and philosophical texts. Working collectively, we learn from each other’s strengths and fill in our individual and collective gaps in knowledge and skill.

Third Aim
The vibrant and living scholarly practice of establishing and supporting religious claims through rational proof which leads to a renewal of religious relevance and commitment in greater society. We will use our publication channels, such as our partner organization The Journal of Islamic Philosophy, along with other outlets— both digital and print—to disperse our knowledge widely in both scholarly and public forums.

Fourth Aim
We aim to establish a unique Islamic curriculum which brings the classical Islamic seminary curriculum into deep engagement with the dominant modes of western education today. This curriculum is tentatively called, The ASIPT Verification and Renewal Curriculum, and we aim to not merely develop it but also to deploy it in a number of partner institutions around the world.
